South West Southpaw Cori Scott, produced a stunning first round victory in the final of the Scottish Amateur Boxing Championships, 52Kg class at the weekend.

Stranraer boxer Cori travelled with coach and family to the Royal Highland Showground, Ingilston in attempt to capture the prize that he had narrowly missed out on the previous year.

With a silver medal guaranteed, Cori went into the bout with only one thing in mind, bringing the gold back to Stranraer.

As the first bell rang, Cori raced across the ring to meet his opponent in his own corner. A stunning flurry of punches caught Jordon Howey from Forgewood, Motherwell cold. Cori scored six unanswered points before he was sent to a neutral corner as the referee issued Howey with an eight count.

The referee called both boxers together, Cori Scott was to continued with the onslaught. Howey had clearly not recovered from the initial barrage of punches so the referee stepped in to end the contest.

Cori has added the Scottish title to the District title he won earlier in the month. He has now staked his claim for a place in the Scotland squad that will travel to Wales in May to compete in the Four Nations Championships.

Millennium ABC will be holding their inaugural boxing show in the Millennium Centre, Stranraer on Friday April 28th. The club will play host to Belfast club Saints, and also a selection local and other Scottish boxers including Scottish Senior Champion David Savage. Tickets cost £8 Adult & £5 concession. A few remaining tickets are available from the Millennium Centre gym.

Cori Scott was narrowly defeated by the impressive and more experienced Connor McCallum at the Scottish Senior Semi finals in Darvel. The score ended 4-2 and proved to be a bruising affair.

Paul Allison took on Peter Lee and was also narrowly defeated 9-11. Paul took the fight to Lee but was caught with clever combinations on the way in. Both bouts acted as show fillers to the Scottish Semi final show.

The Western District Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Glasgow at the weekend with two Stranraer boxers representing the region. In the opening bout of finals day, Cori Scott met Jon Hoey of Forgewood ABC, Motherwell in the final of the 52Kg category.

From the first bell, Southpaw Cori showed his class with a great display of counterpunching. The taller and heavier Forgewood boxer strode forward throwing long straight punches. Cori’s lateral movement and sharp reflexes helped him evade most of the blows, he was then able to come inside and retaliate with fierce body shots.

The stinging body shots took their toll in the second round, as Cori was able to take the fight to his opponent. Stiff left crosses put Hoey on the ropes; Cori was sent to neutral corner as the referee issued Hoey with an eight count. The Forgewood boxer recovered momentarily before Cori caught him with a stinging combination. The referee swiftly stepped in to prevent any unnecessary punishment and it was an emotional Cori Scott’s hand that was raised as the regions first Western District Champion.

Later that day Paul Allison met Dean Marner of the Greenock club, Larkfield ABC in the 69Kg category. Paul dominated his opponent throughout the three rounds, taking the centre of the ring and ramming stiff jabs at his opponent. A bloodied Marner tried in vain to come forward but the aggression of Paul Allison was suffocating. At the end of the bout both boxers exchanged compliments though it was Allison who was to be awarded the title with a convincing 11-4 judges score. Both boxers will be in action in the coming weeks in preparation for the Scottish Championships in March.

3rd February 2006

Paul Allison travelled to the Isle of Arran on Friday night, to take on his latest opponent Ryan Beverage of Garnock Valley Amateur Boxing Club.

Both boxers came into the ring having similar experience and weighing in at 70kg. The three and half hour journey by car and ferry did nothing to subdue Paul Allison's rampaging style, as he bullied his opponent from the first bell. Using his now trademark left hook to devastating effect, Paul left the Ayrshire boxer badly marked up as the round drew to a close.

Going into the second the Ayrshire boxer closed the range from which Paul was having great success. Paul tried in vain to gain leverage with the Beverage holding at every opportunity.

An over enthusiastic Millennium ABC coach caused the second round to be interrupted as he was sent from the hall by the referee for shouting instructions during the round, an offence in the laws of Amateur boxing.

Second, Davie Bowan filled in admirably as he rallied Paul for the third round. The Shire' boxer looked as strong in the third as he did in the first, ramming straight left jabs to the target area of Beverage. The bout looked to have been stopped as the referee stepped in half way in the third, to access a bad cut in the mouth of the Ayrshire boxer. The referee allowed him to continue, but he could do nothing to break Allison's dominance.

The bout was scored as a unanimous victory for Paul Allison. The club boxers travel to Glasgow this weekend for the Western District Championships."

Cori Scott travelled to Greenock on Friday night to take on Chad Cummings of Greenock ABC. The two boxers had met before with the Greenock boxer coming out on top.

From the first bell Cummings came forward, using his height advantage to rifle long raking jabs at the Stranraer boxer. Cori used clever footwork and lateral movement to evade most of the punches, countering with straight left crosses and right hooks.

The second round saw the Greenock boxer score more effectively. The referee warned Cori for ducking too low, with around a foot height advantage it was difficult not to. Cori remained patient and came on strong at the end of the round.

With the decision in the balance going into the third, Cori took the fight to Cummings, driving forward and forcing the Greenock boxer to the ropes, Cori looked the stronger. In a great show of fitness he maintained this momentum through the whole of the round keeping the Greenock boxer on the back foot.

The referee raised the hand of Cori Scott as the judges scored him a 5-3 winner. Both boxers are likely to meet again in the District Championships in February.

9th December 2005

Stranraer boxer Cori Scott travelled to the capital on Friday night to take on the undefeated Scottish Champion Greg Knox of Gilmerton ABC. Cori shared the bill with two Scottish Commonwealth Games representatives and a host of English Internationalists from the famous Repton club of London.

Cori had suffered at the hands of the judges in recent bouts so he was determined not to leave them in any doubt this time. As the first bell sounded, both boxers took the centre of the ring and exchanged heavily with Knox scoring with quick combinations. Stranraer Academy Southpaw Cori, stepped back and reverted to his boxing skills and quickly clawed the points back with strong accurate punching.

In the second Cori showed his clever footwork, turning Knox on the ropes while connecting with ramming left crosses. The watching Scotland Team coach must have been impressed with standard being set by the two young boxers.

Going into the third, the pace slowed as Cori cleverly protected his lead with clever counterpunching tactics, Knox rallied, with the help of his home crowd, pushing the Stranraer boxer back. The referee stepped in to warn Cori for holding, this was a great show of experience on Cori’s part.

At the end of the bout both boxers applauded each other’s efforts, the referee raised the hand of the Stranraer boxer as the judges scored him a 14-10 winner. Cori’s opponent Knox was awarded the best home boxer award, a further endorsement of Cori’s performance. The Millennium Boxing club will close for the festive season but will return to training in January for the Western District Championships being held in February.

26th November 2005

Stranraer boxer Paul Allison made a victorious return to the ring after two months out with a broken hand.

Paul had picked up the injury in his first contest of the new season at Ardrossan in September. On that occasion, despite the injury being sustained in the second round, he lost on a narrow verdict 15-14 against Michael McGregor of Fauldhouse ABC.

Paul travelled to the Dean Park Hotel, Renfrew on Saturday night to meet his latest opponent Gary McCallum of O'Neil's ABC Cambuslang in a 3 x 2min 69kg contest.

From the first bell Paul took the centre of the ring and dictated the pace with his newly polished jab. This was a change in style for Paul from his usual marauding boxing style. The break sustained in a bone in his right hand had enforced Paul to practice solely on his left jab, hook & uppercut for the past two months. These punches proved to be the undoing of his opponent

After the first round Paul had set his opponent up with punch perfect left hand combinations, but subconsciously never let his right hand go, Coach Davie Bowen pointed this out at the break. In the second the right cross was added to Paul's repertoire, on a few occasions the referee looked to be stepping in as Paul's right connected stiffly sending his opponent to the ropes.

In the third round Paul went back to his jab, ramming home his dominance with jab and left hook combinations. A unanimous decision was declared by the referee and the hand of Paul Allison was raised.

Cori Scott was also in action on the same bill in an exhibition bout against a former opponent Harry Barret of Bellahouston. With Cori having moved up a weight division the bout served only as practice for Cori's up and coming competitive bouts. Both boxers have become firm friends and put on a great show of skill for the spectators.

Cori will next be in action on the 9th December at the Ingleston Royal Highland Showground's against an unnamed opponent, where he hopes to be on the right side of the judges decisions. Cori has lost his last two bouts in controversial circumstances, the first being on count back after a 6-6 draw against Greenock boxer Chad Cummings back in September and against Daniel Brady of Glenboig, whom he looked to have clearly beaten, last month.

17th September 2005

Paul Allison travelled up to Ardrossan to meet Micheal McGregor of Faulhouse ABC in the first show of the season held by the ARGO ABC.

In a close contest Micheal McGregor came out 15-14 winner.

Paul sustained a hand injury in the fight that looks to keep him out till the turn of the year.
